Hayes Biggs’ Vidi Aquam is a work of luminous integrity, beautifully formed and informed by the chant of the Easter asperges as well as of the spirit of the entire Vigil. Within its 77 measures the Paschal mystery is articulated beyond the boundaries of prose; I am particularly moved by the ecstasy of the final Alleluia. It is intended for a solo quartet or a small ensemble; I have never known the full choir (more than four on a part) to which I would entrust its important subtleties of pitch, rhythm, and dynamics. In any event it is a virtuoso work which is highly recommended for all who can rise to its opportunities.
